This work was completed 6/22/2022. I worked on it for approximately two months, taking days off in between as I waited for each layer to "speak" to me. This is a mixed media piece using American Vogue magazines found in my NY apartment building-left by someone for the taking. I used these tear sheets and a 1-inch flower punch for decoupaging the "quilted" patches. After researching both modern and traditional American quilts and patterns, I designed my own pattern. The white acrylic paint pen stitches were inspired by quilts from India. Acrylic paint was used to render the horse, as well as the "quilt" background, along with colored pencils (3 colors), and a gold metallic paint pen for stitch detailing. I also use glitter dust in the "sand-dirt" area along the bottom. This work celebrates Americana and its history through the American quilt. It is about nostalgia, and not forgetting what is good in America. It has a foundation of hope, which is an essential part of living. Just like drinking water.
